THE GREATER GOOD. (new geo blog for the week of Dec 04/17)

Now that KVIL has been killed off by Wall Street, I think it’s about time for some of the inside stories to come out. About a year after launching America’s first ever Adult Contemporary format on 103.7 you heard it everywhere. If you asked any woman between the age of 17 and 50 what her favorite radio station was in Dallas or Fort Worth, you could bet on her saying KVIL. In fact, whenever I was flying and heard that Dallas accent on a flight attendant, I would win free drinks from my fellow passengers just by predicting what radio station she listened to.
Hearing KVIL pouring out of cars and the stores in the malls was very encouraging and also made us very optimistic about our chances in the upcoming rating book. However, when the new rating book finally arrived, we discovered that KLIF killed us and I was devastated.
The contests KVIL ran during the survey were called, “The Big Snatch” and “The KLIF Call Girl” which I was convinced would turn most women off. According to the new rating book though I knew nothing about women because KLIF had them all. Luckily our fearless leader, Jim Hilliard, was a lot smarter than the rest of us because all he said about our terrible showing was, “Johns, I need you to go on vacation because I’m not letting you touch KVIL, it’s perfect.”
We found out later from a newsman we hired from KLIF that when his shift was over, his job was to deliver TV sets to lucky listeners. The way it worked was that the station had started a new thing called “call out” music research where they would call people all over the DFW area to find out what their favorite music was. After finishing the music part, they were then asked, “Have you been contacted by anybody recently about your radio listening habits?” If the person answered yes, they won a color TV. However, when the next rating book came out, KVIL began an over thirty-year dominance of Dallas/Ft. Worth and I don’t think KLIF even made the book.

OK HERE’S A FEW OTHER CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS FOR YOU TO PONDER

Who is it that decides what the “greater good” is?

Waking up one day and realizing how many things you don’t have will either motivate or demoralize you. But it’s still your choice.

Paul McCartney’s band is so much better than the Beatles ever were but they ain’t the Beatles man!

I wonder why people other than whites aren’t outed for their racist behavior?

The best thing about experts is that most of them are eventually proved wrong.

The easiest way to win is by surrounding yourself with people who have already won.

Whenever a Superstar reveals his or her political leanings, I immediately begin to think less of their performances.

There is no one in football bigger than football.

Ignorantly forging ahead is still much better than stupidly just standing there.

What I’ve never figured out is when a radio station suspends a talent for saying something that they find offensive, what are the listeners supposed to do during the suspension.

The great thing about America is that you can question its greatness out loud.

I just read that some US colleges have so much money that they are hiding it in offshore accounts.

I feel sorry for people who have to remain a Republican or Democrat for their whole life.

Why doesn’t my amazon tablet like free WiFi?

Little of the good you do today will come up tomorrow, but you can count on the bad hanging around.

Even people who can’t sing love to sing.

Technology without product is just a tool rusting as it sits there waiting for something to happen.

Only the people who already have everything for some reason feel the need to start wars.

I dislike the people of all races with “attitude.”

The thing about Florida is, I’ve lived in my place for ten years now and still don’t know if the heat works.

What I can’t understand is why no matter how many great radio stations have been ruined, the people who ran them into the ground continue to survive?

I think the best deterrent that I have come up with to prevent someone from harming either of my daughters is their ability to convince their attackers that I will track them down and kill them if they don’t walk away right now.

Speaking of daughters, when it comes to the, he said she said part of the trial, I only believe what she said, so if the court doesn’t get it right, see above.

Unfortunately, guns are the only thing that makes us equal.

I find that the older you get, the more fearless you become.

Even though Hollywood shows it more and more, I don’t see a lot of white men out and about with black ladies.

The other day I was thinking about for the ten or so years I was involved with WIBC /WNAP in Indy, how easy my job was. The on-air talent along with the support staff at Fairbanks Broadcasting were simply the best and I’m very proud to say that we ruled Indy. WIBC’s was always #1 and that rating book that came in with 19.4 share with a 27 in the morning, produced a hell of a ratings party. Oh and did I mention that WNAP was tucked in right behind “Big Mama” in 2nd place? Surprising to me though, very few of the incredibly talented people who worked at the two-story brick are in the Indiana Hall Of Fame. Whereas most of the staff from our station in Dallas, KVIL are in the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame. Hey, and they had to compete with places like Houston, San Antonio, and Austin, to get in there.
I wonder why Jim Hilliard who was the GM of WIBC/WNAP and the CEO of Fairbanks not to mention was also the president of the Indiana Pacers is not in there? Hey, you can’t get much more “Hoosier” than that. Speaking of industry giants how come Gary Todd, Orly Knutson, Jerry Baker, Bob Lamey, Paul Page, Chuck Riley, Lou Palmer, Harry Andrews, Buster Bodine, and Mike Griffin aren’t inducted, these guys owned Indy and most of them were also on the worldwide coverage of the Indy 500. I think it’s fantastic that Cris Conner and Tom Cochran are deservedly in there, but unfortunately, Tom was inducted for his TV stuff not for the great news work he did at WIBC & WNAP.

However, even though a few nasty words come to mind about the why of it all, the thing I find even stranger is that the HOF is funded by a trust that our owner Mr. Fairbanks set up before he exited the planet. Hell, it’s even called the “Richard M Fairbanks Indiana Broadcast Hall Of Fame.” How Bizarre!

GEO’S LIFE-LINERS.

You can’t change what you were or weren’t born with, so you might as well get on with what you’re gonna do about it.

If you took away Republican or Democrat away from the candidate’s name, most Americans wouldn’t know who the hell to vote for.

There doesn’t seem to be many socialists in government; they take care of themselves pretty well.

The way it is and the way it should be are light years apart.

Go ahead and dream about tomorrow but you better live for today cuz it’s all ya got.

The most popular music usually is a black person sounding white or a white person who sounds black.

If you didn’t hear it yesterday, it’s probably not true anymore.

Any other words other than yes mean no.

I do believe that Custer was the last American general to lead his troops into battle. Now they just send them.

Life always feels like you’ve been going against the wind. However, when you’re young, it only feels like a slight breeze, but as you age, you begin to grow weary of it. Especially when it begins to feel like a hurricane.

The biggest shows on the radio were always for all things that were good, and against all things that were evil.

The only reason to have a guest on in the morning is so that you can get them to say what you can’t.

There are only two movie themes, an unfamiliar path leading to a familiar ending or a familiar path leading to an unfamiliar ending.

You know it’s gonna be a bad year when even the people who never planned on paying you, don’t buy anything.

Radio today has become so lean and mean that even yes means no.

If the staff were in charge of who got paid what how much do think today’s radio leaders would make?

The five forms of death are.
1. You stop breathing.
2. You no longer notice beautiful things.
3. You stop making love.
4. The little child in you dies.
5. You stop learning.

The client is not always right, but our job is never to keep it from him.

Working hard does not always get rewarded but working smart sure does.
The thing I liked the most about Reagan was that he allowed the middle class to get rich. However, they put a stop to that as soon as he left office.

When I was about 12 years of age, I was lucky enough to hear R&B merge with Country & Western music which produced Rock&Roll and the whole world changed.

All traffic reports sound better on the radio when you do them for the folks who aren’t driving.

When your memories are bigger than your dreams, you’re toast.

When an air talent enthusiastically endorses something he doesn’t believe, it’s called hype. When he does believe, it’s called passion.

The population in South Florida swells by a couple of million each winter, but just like radio everywhere the revenue goes down. What’s up with that?

When National business was at least 40% of a station’s revenue, the GM’s secretary took care of it. Now that it’s minuscule somehow its become a V/P position.

So all the college pollsters look a little lame huh? Now that the U trounced the Irish, would love to see them in the playoffs against Alabama.
