As you’re probably aware, I have three children. Candis and Curtis, who are both still Canadians, live in California.
Camera, who lives with me in Florida while pursuing her master’s in psychology, was born here in Florida.
The weird thing is, Cami is the only one of my kids who is into Hockey and loves the Florida Panthers.
She watches most of the games on TV but also goes to a bunch of them, and whenever the Winnipeg Jets come to town, I go with her.
Recently, she came to me and excitedly said, “Daddy Sam Reinhart is going to be at the Wellington Mall signing stuff, so I’m gonna get him to sign my jersey.” (Sam currently is the second-highest scorer in the NHL)
Knowing Sam was born in Vancouver, I said, “Don’t forget to tell him that your Dad is from Winnipeg and is well aware of Beautiful British Columbia, having owned a home near Kelowna. It may buy you some extra face time.”
When she returned home and proudly showed me her signed jersey, I asked her how he reacted when you told him about your dad.
She said, “Daddy, I was so nervous that when it became my turn to talk to him and to get him to sign my jersey, I froze and didn’t say a thing.”
(On top is a photo of Cami in one of her many Panthers outfits, me in my Jets jersey, and grandson Nathaniel wearing my unsigned Sam jersey at a recent Panther Jets game. Below is a photo of Cami’s signed Sam Reinhart jersey hanging on the wall in her bedroom.)

@WendyHolmes: Smart women marry dumb guys and vice versa because they’re dumb! It isn’t rocket science, Geo!! I had a good chuckle when I read this one-liner! (3/18/24)
Geo: Being dumb is a choice, Wendy.
@BruceWalker: I’d be willing to bet that Katherine was right on the money, not only with any other guy at Swamp Grass Willey’s. What a burden to be carried around. (Yeah, I would)
Geo: Kinda like having records out and fighting off the groupies, huh, Bruce? 🙂
@BruceMunson: “Why, when you’re freaking out, do people ask you if you would like some water?”For reasons unknown, I haven’t experienced this…but hope springs eternal! Geo’s Daily Life-Liners)
Geo: You live a sheltered life. Bruce, I envy you.
Cat Simon: With Cami’s master’s degree dreams I can only imagine the discussions you and her have at home. You could probably do a series of writings just on that on camera would be even better. (Sam’s The Mam.)
Geo: Unfortunately, Cat we have very few of those discussions because I’m not smart enough to figure out what she’ saying.
lol
Jerry Del Colliano: I love hockey so much I should be an honorary Canadian — instead I am a Flyers fan and what resonated with me is that my daughter used to sit on my lap when she was barely a toddler to watch the games. Being from Philly, she learned how to boo. But as she grew older learned the fine art of eating cotton candy while sitting on my lap — what a sticky feeling that was. When she was 13, she and her cousin used to hang out near the players parking lot to swoon over the handsome ones — oy, the challenges of being a father. Over the years we realize the importance of a game where playing hard is required, sportsmanship is expected after playoff series even if a player tried to take someone’s eye out 5 minutes earlier and now the importance of a rebuild — not only hockey teams like the Flyers but people must start over from time to time. Thanks for the hockey life memories you triggered. (Sams The Man)
Geo: Thanks for the read, Jerry. The part that’s difficult for me to understand, Jerry is my other two kids were both born in Canada and are still Canadians but could care less about Hockey. Cami was born in Florida and is addicted to it. Go figure!
