Jed Duval: George: This Sunday morning while waiting at the Indiana State Museum for my friend from Denver in Indianapolis for the tomorrow’s total solar eclipse (Evansville, Bloomington, Franklin and Indianapolis), I was listening to a public radio that is almost always unbiased, well-sourced and factual: “Freakonomics Radio”. If the program is not available over-the-air, it is available via podcasts. The topic was and is a deep dive into how this country got into the immigration mess. The current immigration laws were passed in 1965 and revised again by Congress in 1990. The program explored every allegation about the U.S. immigration laws and policies that dominate Fox News and other conservative libertarian news / propaganda outlet. The program twice aired speeches by Ronald Reagan, once at the rededication of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in the mid-1980s and ended with Reagan’s last speech as President in 1989, both stressing the importance of immigration in all walks of American life from immigrants from every county in the world. I think most pundits against immigration on Fox and Newsmax especially have conveniently forgotten Reagan’s positions on immigration. The truths about illegal immigration are very complex which but it is easier to demagogue the real issues rather than spend the necessary efforts and do the work that by law only both houses of Congress can do. I wish all thinking Americans would listen to these programs before rattling off general untruths when the actual statistical and economic facts do not support these hyperbolic rantings and ravings of pundits who will say anything and everything to get ratings. (The programs are 29-minutes long.)
