Radio thankfully has always come fairly easily to me. The reason being I think is because when I first started out as a board op I got to work with and learn from a bunch of Radio Hall Of Fame members and was smart enough to continue to do so for most of my career.
I’m talking about working with giants in Canada like Lloyd Moffat, Jack Wells, Randy Moffatt, Gary Russell, Allan Waters, Fred Sherratt, Ted Rogers, Chuck McCoy and Gary Miles. Here in America I got to work along side legends like Cris Conner, Tom Cochran, Fred Heckman, Richard M Fairbanks, Jack Morrow, Joe Pickett, Bob Hoover, Jim Shelton, Bob Lamey, Don Bleu, Dr. Don Rose, Ron Chapman, Jim West, Michael Selden, Jerry Bobo, Suzie Humphries, Hugh Lampman, Wes Wise, Bob Morrison, Jack Schell, Ben Laurie, Ken Barnett and Loren & Wally. How could I fail!

The KVIL crew 70s/80s were a staff of giants. Ron, Suzie Humphreys, Andy McCollum, Ray Walker, Larry Dixon, Cat Simon, Ken Barnett, Bill Gardner, et al.
You know it was amazing radio when you can remember it, word for word, without prompting, thirty-three years later. My favorite: during the annual KVIL trimulcast with Channel 11…Ron had a female harpist in an evening gown strumming in the rear of the studio. She appeared frequently on camera but was never acknowledged or alluded to the entire week. Finally, the last caller on Friday “inquired.” Ron turned around, did a beautifully subtle double take, and said…”Her? Oh, she came with the building.” CUE JINGLE.
George, you and Mr. C created some timeless radio at Mockingbird and Central. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you Andy, As brazen as KVIL was it was also very subtle and treated its listeners like they knew what was going on so it never over explained things. Most people didn’t know that during the 70’s and 80’s KVIL never had a slogan because we just wanted to be what our listeners thought we were. We also hardly ever mentioned the music we just talked about what we really loved the most … Dallas Texas!
