According to a recent survey, young people change the station 27 times an hour just looking for compelling Radio programming. My Daughter Cami just kills that number and I wonder if it’s because she is different or is the product just that bad in West Palm Beach.

On an average 65% of Americans only listen to FM. In markets where the product on AM is good though the figure falls to 50%
Speaking of good product, WTOP in Washington which is America’s top Radio biller gets a lot of its money from folks who are just trying to communicate with the Government.
In Ottawa we made huge money at CFRA because we knew most of the Government including the Prime Minister listened to us and a few folks really wanted to communicate with them. Ratings didn’t seem to mean anything to them.
Very sad about the passing of Dick Clark but he was the reason I quit The Jury. Dick was a dick, he never called to invite us to appear on Bandstand so I said the hell with it!

There is no way to get direct billing on a radio show without a live morning show. Lucky for Ryan Seacrest KISS-FM in LA doesn’t sell direct.

If you live by the sword you die by the sword! There used to be a legendary broadcaster on the air here in South Florida by the name of Neil Rogers. Neil prided himself in telling Management to go to hell both in person and on the air. Seeing as his ratings were so large the Management tolerated him but they were waiting. When the first bad PPM numbers came out Neil was gone which may have contributed to his now been gone forever.

I like the one about “If you are fine with today” I was telling someone about my goals & they had a good chuckle – at your age why are you setting goals. Now, I know I’m old, but I would feel a heck of a lot older if I didn’t have goals…that is what keeps you looking for tomorrow to achieve those goals.
A lot of people Em never even became anything until they were well beyond our years. I’m not done yet!

Many years ago, the legendary Jeff Kaye once commented on Radio people transitioning to TV. He said it’s easy, because people with a radio mind, have no idea what TV can’t do.
Maybe the reason young people change the station 27 times an hour is because there just isn’t anything REALLY NEW AND INNOVATIVE on the radio? In any market. Nowhere. On any dial. But it also begs the question…what are they searching for at a clip of 27 times an hour? Where’s the research on that? Maybe they’re searching for a new platform to “connect” with? Maybe they’re subconciously trying to find it on radio. But not finding it? No local radio station connects “immediacy”or delivers it. It would cost too much. Also, if it’s not immediately available on your I phone or I pad…it’s not there.
…and George, the reason you need to hang out regularly with women who couldn’t even think of doing you, is that it makes you look more interresting to other women who’ve never met you. Marketing George. Marketing! The next time you show up on a busy night at the same location “alone”?? Chick-a-boom-boom-boom!

Um I believe Neil was off the air because he became extremely sick… he did his show for a time from his studio-equipped home in Canada somewhere..and he finally succumbed to a myriad of illnesses, including alzheimers.
Other than that, we agree on EVERYTHING else you said. Scary!
Yes Neil did do his show from Toronto which sped up the decline in his ratings then when PPM showed up it wasn’t as kind to him as the diary method was so they bought him out. He got sick shortly after that.
-0- promotion. -o- marketing. constant budget cutting. for years. just ‘sit there and be a legend and get us ratings’…we’ll keep hiring crap for the rest of the day around you, and use hopelessly boring sports radio formulas. It’s all on you, Neil.
