Long before I got into radio, I played in a few bands along with the likes of some other Winnipeggers such as Burton Cummings of The Guess Who, Randy Bachman of BTO, and the legendary Neil Young.
It all began while going to high school at TCI in Transcona and I was invited to join a local vocal group by the name of Shayne and The Devines. However, not being much of a singer, before long I began recruiting a few of my talented friends to join us. We had Pete Proskurnik on sax, Gordy Duke played the drums, Rolly Blaquiere was on bass, his brother Lawrence played the piano, and I was on guitar and became Shayne and The Rebel Raiders. (top photo below.) After a few rehearsals at the Maple Leaf Community Club, we began playing for dances at some of the other Community clubs in Transcona. Then realizing that our name Rebel Raiders sounded a little too southern for a northern group like us, we changed it to The Phantoms. (next two photos)
After spotting Perry Waksvic who could not only play guitar better than me but could sing all those Chuck Berry tunes too, I moved over to rhythm and he became our lead guitar. When we also added another sax man by the name of Jimmy Harrison we instantly became one of the best bands in Winnipeg. Now, not only were we playing all over Winnipeg but also all over Manitoba and the northern states as well.
However, when Shayne found out that it wasn’t going to be Shayne and The Phantoms, he left in a bit of a huff, so we recruited Donny Burns to replace him. (bottom two photos) Not done yet, we added a vocal group called the Castaways and became good enough to back up all the singers, at most of the variety shows including Bobby Curtola whenever he was in town.
Unfortunately, as good as we were, it was impossible to make any money with that many players, so when the Beatles invaded and conquered America with four, we cut to five. Things were going well until Perry started to become a pain in the ass, so we exited him and got Randy Bachman (BTO) to fill in until we recruited Terry Kenny. We also used Garry Peterson (The Guess Who) in the same manner to buy some time whenever we were between drummers but when lost Donny to Arc Records in Toronto, it was a real blow. We didn’t know it at the time but losing Donny was the best thing that could ever happen to us because it changed our lives.
Donny’s departure had come at a bad time because not only did we still have a few gigs left to play, but I’d also booked a studio at CKY and talked two of the station’s biggest Dee-Jays, Daryl ‘B’ and Chuck Dann (Chuck Riley) into helping us cut a demo tape. Our plan was to send the tape to local dance promoters such as John Wood, in hopes of procuring some gigs in the New Year. None of us at that time had any idea that later, John (J Robert Wood) would be a Hall Of Fame radio guy, Donny would become a Dee-Jay and voice-over guy, and I would move to America as a radio consultant. How weird is that?
Anyway, by the time our studio date rolled around, we’d recruited Bruce Walker as Donny’s replacement, but he wasn’t ready yet, so off we headed to CKY on that cold winter’s night, late December 1964 to cut nothing but instrumentals.

(Click on the photo of Shayne & The Devines to hear The Phantoms play “Not Guilty.”)”

While waiting for Chuck and Daryl to set up, Bruce who had come along to the session to hang out, asked Terry and me if we could help him finish up a song that he was working on called “Until You Do.” He was hoping that maybe we could tack it on at the end of our session if we had some recording time left.

(Click on the photo below to hear “Until You Do”)

We’d gone into that session sounding like the Phantoms but came out of it as The Jury with a whole new sound. The weird part about all this is that even today some fifty years later, I can still remember every detail of that first recording session, but very little of those that followed. However, one thing I’ll never forget is hearing Hal Ross of London Records saying those immortal words after his hearing, “Until You Do.” “Hell, I’ll release that!” And just like that, we were London Records newest recording artists.
The only thing that ever came even close to Hal’s words, were Jimmy Darin’s (Jim Hilliard) which we heard him say on the radio shortly after we dropped our new record off on our way out of town. “Here’s a CKY exclusive, The Jury, with Until You Do.” Wow! We almost blew the speakers out of the car. And the only way I can explain how it felt to hear your record on the radio for the first time is to say that it was better than sex!
On a side note, Burton Cummings recently told me that he bought our first two records with the money he earned from his paper route. So when “Until You Do” began slipping down the charts, back into the studio we went to record our second release which was called “I Tried To Tell Her.” Thanks for the purchase, Burton.

When we went back into the CKY studios to record our third release called,  “Back In My World,” the whole world was beginning to change and so were we.

(Click on the photo to hear “Back In My World”)

When “Back In My World” fell off the charts, we decided not only to change recording studios, but also record companies, our look, and also get a new drummer by the name of Kenny Hordichuk. When we recorded “Please Forget Her” at the Kay-Bank studios in Minneapolis, it became the #1 Canadian record in Canada which got us an American release on Port Records.

(Click on the photo to hear “Please Forget Her”)

On the flip side of “Please Forget Her” was a tune called “Who Dat?” which was a totally a different sound for us and went on became a cult favorite. Not only was it covered by a couple of punk bands (The Nomads and Vipers) some thirty years later, but a recent magazine article claimed that Who Dat? was fifty years ahead of its time.

Playing with The Jury was a wonderful experience, but as it turned out to be much better at radio than I was at being a musician and I was so busy doing radio that I never thought about my band days much. However, when I got the call some twenty years later that John Einarson, author of the book “Shakin’ All Over,” was putting a sixties band reunion together, I must admit that I got very excited.
I hadn’t seen my bandmates since I left the group back in the mid-sixties, so I was looking forward to having our own reunion at the 60’s reunion thing and when I flew in from San Diego, I discovered just how big the event was when I hit the border. As I was going through customs, they asked what the purpose of my visit was and when I told them that I was involved in the 60’s reunion thing, they smiled and said, “That’s the hottest ticket in town, welcome home.” Not only was it sold out, but it was also being televised. Hey, when you’ve got Neil, Randy, and Burton together at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, you count on TV being there too.
That whole night was just mind-boggling, especially when Randy and Burton strapped a Fender Strat on me and  then pushed me out on stage saying, “It’s not The Jury without you man.” Miraculously, all the chords came back to me instantly, but what I’m most happy about is that we’re all still alive. Although, once again our look has changed as you can see in the pictures below. (for a taste of how the reunion concert went, click on the link at the bottom of the page.)

Sadly, Madame Nora Venchi (pictured above) passed away last week at 92 years of age. Madame, for as long as I’ve known her has been the Secretary-Treasurer of our Condo Association and because she had no family to leave behind, we became her family and she took good care of us. Nora who was unusually petite, was originally from South America, spoke six languages, and was a prima ballerina who also taught at Harvard.
She adored my daughter Cami ever since she was a little girl and every time she saw her, told her how beautiful she was. I’m sure Cami adored the fact that Madame was one of the very few adults that she ever got to tower over. I miss you already Madame and can only hope that you are now dancing with the angels.

GEO’S LIFE-LINERS

POLITICAL & POLITICALLY INCORRECT
I guess we’re lucky that Trump wasn’t at Waco Texas back in the day huh? He may have beaten Clinton’s record for the killing of kids.

Is it only wishful thinking that keeps the government treating us like they did our parents?

Have you ever stopped to think how much money the government spends on its own protection? They have the Armed Forces, the CIA, FBI, Secret Service, Homeland Security, DEA, NSA, DIA, Treasury, Office of Intelligence and Counter Intelligence, Department of Defense, NRO, Airforce, Army, Marine, Naval and Coast Guard Intelligence, plus some secret ones. All we have protecting us are the police, and they don’t look that friendly.
Things must be going well in Korea; otherwise, we’d be over hearing about it.

REALITY
Repeating a lie doesn’t make it truer.

It’s too bad President Bush had to miss all the great things they said about him at his funeral.

Who you are is what you remember.

Nobody becomes successful all on their own.

Growing up in Winnipeg, the only black people we ever saw were all on TV. When I saw Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and James Brown amongst others on the Ed Sullivan show, not to mention those who played Basketball, Football, and Major League Baseball, I just assumed all of them were special. Imagine my surprise when I moved to America.

When you’ve had more points scored against you than you’ve scored, there’s no sense you being in the playoffs; you’re just wasting our time.

The applause you receive for a job well done is in direct proportion to how much more you accomplished after doing what you were expected to do.

Knowledge comes from experience, but great knowledge usually comes from all the bad experiences.

One must believe in something.

What people believe is their truth.

You are what you can’t stop doing.

A lot of folks are loyal until it’s opportune not to be.

Even the worst of us wanna be loved.

It’s a lot easier to steal when you’re on the right side of the law.

There are plenty of reasons to hit a woman, but you just don’t do it.

Talkers don’t change the world, doers do.

The Winnipeg Jets are still first in their division, and the Colts move forward, all is well.

MEDIA
Great personalities talk about how much they love where they live, and the people who also live there, talk about how much they love them.

Hey Mr. Dee-Jay, how does that old song go, “When you’ve got nothing to say, say nothing at all.”

People who know how to balance the books, unfortunately, have no idea how to innovate or inspire.

You know you’re getting old when the only name you recognize in Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band which is filled with oldies acts, is Ringo’s.

QUESTIONS?
How did Hitler grab the top spot as being the worst guy on earth? Hell, he only killed six to nine million people, Stalin killed twenty to thirty.

Speaking of Hitler, when he got himself all lathered up at all his rallies, I wonder what the hell he was yelling about?

I wonder if my music sounds as weird to my grandson today as my as my grandparents’ music did to me yesterday?

Have black folks ever acknowledged the white people who have helped them over the years?

Let’s see if I’ve got this right. Some folks are very upset that Russia may have meddled in our election even though over the years we’ve meddled in almost every election all over the world. Aren’t we due?

So when we finally go all electric, just how friendly do you suppose our government will be with the Arabs?

How can thousands of Catholic Priests be charged with sexual improprieties but not one Nun?

Are there any intellectuals who weren’t voracious readers?

Why do they bother interviewing the players after the game, they all sound like they are running for office?

How do find out how much money is being funneled to politicians from the oil and electric companies to slow solar down?

Do the Vikings actually pay their QB 84 million, are they crazy? In fact, none of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks made the playoffs.

I wonder who’s ranked lower, politicians or the news media?

How much will a car that burns fossil fuel be worth in 5 years?

How do the lyrics in Hip Hop and Rap slide by without anybody slamming them?

Geo’s Media Blog. (Unthinkable Trump) 1/11/18. #1 in 2018.

Sitting here in the middle of the political scene as a Centrist I get to see both sides of the aisle but there appears to be only one side to the Donald Trump story. So even though I’m not a big fan of his as I’m not of most businessmen or politicians, the way the Liberals have been pounding him has made me grow more than a little suspicious. I don’t remember reading bad stuff about Obama, but I do remember that he pissed me off several times. In fact, as I recall, his first term didn’t go all that well and had the Republicans, stupidly, not run a rich guy against him when the one percenters were not the soup du jour, he may not have had a second term.
Knowing though that enough people liked Trump to elect him as our new president, I thought, there’s got to be another side to this story, so I went looking for it. Finally, I came across this article written by Liz Crokin who is an award-winning author and a seasoned journalist who is also an advocate for sex crime victims. She began her journey at the University of Iowa where she received a bachelor’s in journalism and political science.

Trump DoesThe Unthinkable by Liz Crokin.

Donald Trump is a
racist, bigot, sexist, xenophobe, anti-Semitic and Islamophobe — did
I miss anything?….Oh Right he is also deplorable. The left and the
media launch these hideous kinds of attacks at Trump everyday; yet,
nothing could be further from the truth about the real estate
mogul. As an entertainment journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to cover Trump for over a decade, and in all my years covering him I’ve never heard anything negative about the man until he announced he was running for president.Keep in mind, I got paid a lot of money to dig up dirt on celebritieslike Trump for a living so a scandalous story on the famous billionaire could’ve potentially sold a lot of magazines and would’ve been a Huge feather in my cap.Instead, I found that he doesn’t drink alcohol or do drugs, he’s a hardworking businessman. On top of that, he’s one of the most generous celebrities in the world with a heart filled with more gold than his $100 million New York penthouse.Since the media has failed so miserably at reporting the truth about Trump, I decided to put together some of the acts of kindness he’s committed over three decades which has gone virtually unnoticed or fallen on deaf ears.

• In 1986, Trump prevented the foreclosure of Annabell Hill’s
family farm after her husband committed suicide.  Trump
personally phoned down to the auction to stop the sale of her home and
offered the widow money.  Trump decided to take action after he
saw Hill’s pleas for help in news
reports.

In 1988, a commercial airline refused to fly Andrew Ten, a sick
Orthodox Jewish child with a rare illness, across the country to get
medical care because he had to travel with an elaborate life-support
system.  His grief stricken parents contacted Trump for help and
he didn’t hesitate to send his own plane to take the child from Los
Angeles to New York so he could get his
treatment.

In 1991, 200 Marines who served in Operation Desert Storm spent
time at Camp Jejune in North Carolina before they were scheduled to
return home to their families.  However, the Marines were told
that a mistake had been made and an aircraft would not be able to take
them home on their scheduled departure date.  When Trump got wind
of this, he sent his plane to make two trips from North Carolina to
Miami to safely return the Gulf War Marines to their loved
ones.

In 1995, a motorist stopped to help Trump after the limo he was
traveling in got a flat tire.  Trump asked the Good Samaritan how
he could repay him for his help.  All the man asked for was a
bouquet of flowers for his wife.  A few weeks later Trump sent
the flowers with a note that read:  We’ve paid off your
mortgage.

In 1996, Trump filed a lawsuit against the city of Palm Beach,
Florida, accusing the town of discriminating against his Mar-a-Lago
resort club because it allowed Jews and blacks.  Abraham Foxman,
who was the Anti-Defamation League Director at the time, said Trump
put the light on Palm Beach not on the beauty and the glitter, but on
its seamier side of discrimination.  Foxman also noted that
Trump’s charge had a trickle-down effect because other clubs followed
his lead and began admitting Jews and
blacks.

In 2000, Maury Povich featured a little girl named Megan who
struggled with Brittle Bone Disease on his show and Trump happened to
be watching.  Trump said the little girl’s story and positive
attitude touched his heart.  So he contacted Maury and gifted the
little girl and her family with a very generous
check.

In 2008, after Jennifer Hudson’s family members were tragically
murdered in Chicago, Trump put the Oscar-winning actress and her
family up at his Windy City hotel for free.  In addition to that,
Trump’s security took extra measures to ensure Hudson and her family
members were safe during such a difficult
time.

In 2013, New York bus driver Darnell Barton spotted a woman
close to the edge of a bridge staring at traffic below as he drove
by.  He stopped the bus, got out and put his arm around the woman
and saved her life by convincing her to not jump.  When Trump
heard about this story, he sent the hero bus driver a check simply
because he believed his good deed deserved to be
rewarded.

In 2014, Trump gave $25,000 to Sgt. Andrew Tamoressi after he
spent seven months in a Mexican jail for accidentally crossing the
US-Mexico border.  President Barack Obama couldn’t even be
bothered to make one phone call to assist with the United States
Marine’s release; however, Trump opened his pocketbook to help this
serviceman get back on his
feet.

In 2016, Melissa Consin Young attended a Trump rally and
tearfully thanked Trump for changing her life.  She said she
proudly stood on stage with Trump as Miss Wisconsin USA in 2005.
However, years later she found herself struggling with an incurable
illness and during her darkest days she explained that she received a
handwritten letter from Trump telling her she’s the bravest woman, I
know.  She said the opportunities that she got from Trump and his
organizations ultimately provided her Mexican-American son with a
full-ride to college.

Lynne Patton, a black female executive for the Trump Organization, released a
statement in 2016 defending her boss against accusations that he’s a
racist and a bigot.  She tearfully revealed how she’s struggled
with substance abuse and addiction for years.  Instead of kicking
her to the curb, she said the Trump Organization and his entire family
loyally stood by her through immensely difficult times.

Donald Trump’s
kindness knows no bounds and his generosity has and continues to touch the lives of people from every sex, race and religion. WhenTrump sees someone in need, he wants to help  Two decades ago, Oprah asked Trump in a TV interview if he’d run for president. He said: If it got so bad, I would never want to rule it out
totally, because I really am tired of seeing what’s happening with this country.
That day has come.Trump sees that America is in need and he wants to help. How unthinkable!

On the other hand, have you ever heard of Hillary or Obama ever doing such things with their own resources?
