Sir Paul McCartney who undoubtedly will go down in history as one of greatest songwriters of all time recently gave a lecture at a college that his stepson attended here in South Florida.
During the Q&A portion of the session, Paul, when asked by one of the students, how the songwriting part of his life began he responded by saying that learning to write songs became a necessity. The Beatles he went on to say like every other group in Liverpool, did cover versions of American hits but the problems with that began when we became big enough to be the headliners. Being the headliner was great except for the part where we closed the show. When it came time for us to hit the stage the groups who had performed earlier had already played all tunes that we planned on playing that night.

The only reason Paul claimed that he and John ever began writing songs was out of pure frustration. We basically learned to write so that we’d have something to play when it was the Beatles turn to do so.
