When I began my radio career at CKY in Winnipeg as a part-time board-op my first break came early on. Just before the annual Christmas party Management decided to shake things up by making us draw for our tables and that’s where I really lucked out. Not only did I get to sit with Jimmy Darin (Jim Hilliard) who was the station’s program director but also with Canada’s legendary TV sportscaster and morning man Jack Wells. Hey, how cool was that and what an opportunity for a rookie to impress. I couldn’t let the opportunity get away from me so I foolishly used humor as my attention grabber. However as you can see in the picture above I must have ended up been rather successful. The reason that I know that it was me who caused the laughter was because my soon to be bride Lana wasn’t really laughing. She of course had heard all of my “A” material many times before.

It’s not in what order you play the songs from the “safe list” that determines whether or not you’re a good programmer. It’s being smart enough to know if your target audience wants to hear that particular tune on your radio station.
Absolutely nothing is permanent.

George: I think that your observation about corporate America is correct today, but once, say up to maybe 1960, the observation made by the then-President of General Motors, “Engine” Charlie Wilson at his confirmation hearing for Ike’s Secretary of Defense job, in front of the U.S. Senate, “I have always believed that what was good for the country was good for General Motors, and vice-versa.” was true for most business leaders then. It says a great deal about the decline in character of many corporate (not all) leaders of this country today which is also a reflection of society in general. You were taught well by your father and mother, George, as your priorities are family, friends, business and mankind.
George, your sense of humanity, and peripheral perspective is refreshing. I grow weary of those who have taken over talk radio, the house, and congress, with dark thoughts, narrow minds, and bully tactics. We should be a wellspring of brainstorming, sharing ideas that make life better for more than just the priveleged. Keep sharing, and thinking outside the box. You never know where the next good idea will come from. One thing is for certain. If we don’t document our thoughts, they can quickly evaporate, never to be found again.

My radio career ended shortly after we last met …. OB. It was bad idea, as you likely guessed…….ironically ratings have crashed and it’s number 3 ….CBC wins the day in WPG at last report.
Funny thing George stations. I worked for all signed off after I departed .
CKY and CKCK both signed off long after I departed so did CKRC ( sent reports while I was in Regina.
